Understanding Financial Aid: What Every Family Should Know

Once you understand what college costs, the next question is: how do you pay for it? This is where financial aid may factor in. It may be awarded based on any number of criteria: the family’s financial situation, a specific college or major choice, high school grades and extracurriculars, etc. Two fundamentally different types of financial aid are available - need-based aid and merit-based aid, and some scholarships are a combination of both. Let’s dive a bit deeper.

Need-based Financial Aid

Need-based financial aid is determined by analyzing a family’s financial circumstances–their income, assets, and other financial factors. The underlying principle is that families should contribute what they can afford, and aid fills some (or all) of the gap between what they think you can pay and what college costs.

Need-based aid can come from federal sources (Pell Grants, federal student loans), state sources, or the college itself. It is important to note that “need” is not defined by you! It is defined by the federal government and/or the college itself. So quite often there will be a deficit between what you think you can afford, the need-based funds you are awarded, and the final price tag.

To determine whether you will qualify for need-based aid, you should complete a Student Aid Index (SAI) calculator, which will provide an estimate of your SAI, used by the government to determine need-based aid. In addition, each private college typically provides a Net Price Calculator (NPC) where you can enter key information and it will estimate how much you are likely to pay at that institution.

FAFSA and CSS Profile Explained:

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is required for all federal financial aid (Pell Grants, federal student loans, work-study programs). Note that, while submitting the form can be beneficial for many families, the FAFSA is NOT REQUIRED for graduation in the State of Texas , despite what your high school counselors may tell you. If you would like to opt out, you will need to fill out this form and submit it to your high school counselor.
The CSS Profile is used by 200+ undergraduate institutions to distribute their own institutional funds (grants and scholarships from the college itself). The CSS Profile opens on October 1st and may be required to be completed in addition to the FAFSA (if any of your colleges require it). You can check the list of colleges here to see if you will be required to fill out this form.

How will I formally apply for need-based financial aid when the time comes?

For public institutions, you will need to complete the FAFSA Form to apply for federally-based financial aid. A few public universities and many private universities also require that you complete the CSS Profile . These will be due in the Fall of your senior year, so it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with these forms if you will be applying for need-based financial aid. If you have questions, you should consult with your financial planner.

Merit-based Financial Aid

Merit-based aid, often referred to as a “scholarship”, does not take financial need into consideration, but rather, is awarded based on what you bring to the campus community, typically academic achievement (grades, test scores), but also leadership experience, volunteer or work experience, athletic ability, artistic talent, or other special skills. Merit aid is often offered by colleges (not the federal government) to attract students they want to enroll. Note though that many scholarships use a combination of both need and merit to determine who will be awarded.

How am I considered for these scholarships?

Specific Colleges

Various consideration methods are used, including:

Automatic Consideration: Students are sometimes evaluated as part of the college admissions process, so when they receive their acceptance letter, they may also receive a merit-based scholarship award amount at the same time (or within a relatively short period of time after). These are the “easiest” (least incremental work) scholarships to receive and are often the largest. To maximize your chances for these, you should apply to colleges where you will stand out! Your GPA should be higher than their average, your SAT or ACT scores should be in their upper 25th percentile.
Application Required: Some scholarships and special programs require an additional application process, as simple as filling out a small amount of information, up to additional essays, videos, interviews, or even multi-day-long group projects. These scholarships can often be found on a specific financial aid or scholarship section of each college’s website.
Invitation to Apply: Some colleges use the admissions application to pre-screen candidates and then invite some students to apply to special programs and/or scholarships.

Private Scholarships for Targeted Profiles

Some scholarships are made available by donors (private citizens, community organizations, or corporations) who want to target candidates with specific characteristics. Some examples of these specific characteristics include:

Location: Scholarships that target candidates with residency in a particular place. This can include state of residence, city or metro area, or country of residency.
High School: Scholarships that target graduates of specific high schools.
Membership: Scholarships that target children of members of civic organizations like Rotary Club, military branches, religious organizations or for students whose parents work at a specific business.
Personal Status: Select scholarships have been created for unique personal status including children in the foster system, homeless families, and families displaced by natural disasters.

How do I find private scholarships?

If these target scholarships are available only to students admitted to a specific college, they are most often found on the college website. If the targeted scholarship is open to students regardless of where they plan to attend college, then you will generally use web searches to find them - the local Rotary club, the parents’ employers internal websites, etc. Be sure to check with your high school counselor for a list of potential opportunities.

Scholarship Portals

In recent years, online scholarship portals and college admissions websites have marketed access to significant scholarship funds. It is not uncommon for a basic signup to show a pool of millions of dollars and hundreds of scholarships. Despite these claims, this is recommended as the lowest priority for the scholarship search based on effort and expected results.

Portals can be classified into 3 categories. General portals like Fastweb or Scholarships.com, integrated portals that are embedded as part of a college search platform like Niche, or micro-scholarships web applications like RaiseMe. Please note that to reap any significant rewards from sites like these, you will need to put extensive and dedicated effort into checking the sites regularly and applying to numerous opportunities.

Navigating financial aid doesn't have to be intimidating. The key is to start early, understand what types of aid you may qualify for, and be proactive in seeking out opportunities, from automatic college scholarships to targeted private awards. Remember, every dollar you secure through grants and scholarships is a dollar you won't have to borrow. When you're looking at college costs, you'll see two different numbers thrown around, and it's important to understand what each one means.

Tuition

Tuition is simply what the college charges for your classes and instruction. Think of it as the price tag for the academic experience itself.

Tuition covers:

Course instruction
Access to academic facilities and resources
Sometimes mandatory fees (technology, activity, health services)

Cost of Attendance (COA)

COA, on the other hand, is the college's estimate of what it will actually cost you to attend for one year, and it includes a lot more than just tuition. This is the number colleges use when calculating your financial aid package.

Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) includes:

Tuition and fees
Room and board (whether you live on or off campus)
Books and supplies
Transportation (getting to/from campus)
Personal expenses (laundry, toiletries, entertainment)
Important Notes about COA
COA is an estimate - they are taking an average of the price of all of their dorms on campus, an average of the different meal plans available, etc. So know that your COA could be higher.
COA estimates usually have lower-than-actual travel cost estimates if you will be at an out-of-state college. Often they estimate $1500 for travel, but if a student will be coming home several times throughout the year, if parents will be traveling to/from the college for move in and out, etc. that number can quickly add up. So be prepared!
COA does NOT include Greek-life expenses and these can often add up quickly! It’s not unusual for the dues, new clothes, parties, etc. to cost an additional $5-10K that is rarely talked about. So it’s important to include that into your overall budget if sororities and fraternities are already under discussion!

A word of caution: The difference can be significant. For example, a college might have $15,000 in tuition, but a total COA of $30,000 once you factor in housing, meals, books, and other living expenses. So be very careful when colleges advertise their costs. Marketing materials and headlines often highlight only the tuition because it looks much more affordable. Always dig deeper to find the full Cost of Attendance to get a realistic picture of what you'll actually need to budget for college.

Important College Planning Tip

It is critically important that parents and students are “on the same page” about the cost of college AND that you are communicating this with your college consultant! While we know it can be difficult to talk to your student about your finances, it is a waste of time, and potential heartache, to have a student put their heart and soul into applications for colleges to which there is very little (to no!) chance that as a family, you are willing to pay a certain amount. It is far better up front to set reasonable expectations about an upper limit on an annual cost for college! I cannot stress this enough - it’s important to have this figured out BEFORE students start working on their college lists!

What Classes Do I Need to Take to Graduate from College?

Your roughly 125-135 credits break into three parts.

1. General Education (30-40 credits)

Classes everyone at the university or college takes for a well-rounded education.

Typical General Education (sometimes called Core Curriculum) requirements:

English/Writing (6-9 credits) - Composition, sometimes literature
Math (3-6 credits) - Algebra, statistics (varies by major)
Science (6-9 credits) - At least one with lab
Social Science (6-9 credits) - Psychology, sociology, economics, etc.
Humanities (6-9 credits) - History, philosophy, literature
Arts (3-6 credits) - Music, art, theater
Sometimes: Foreign language (2 semesters)

Example: Even Biology majors take English, and English majors take science with a lab.

2. Major Requirements (50-60 credits)

Your primary field of study that will be listed on your diploma.

Within your major, there will be two types of courses:

Core Major Courses (required for everyone in the major)
Example for Psychology: Intro to Psych, Research Methods, Statistics

Major Electives (courses within your major that you choose based on interests)
Example for Psychology: Choose from Cognitive Psych, Social Psych, Sports Psych, etc.

3. Electives (20-40 credits)

Courses you choose! Use these to:

Explore interests
Build skills
Add a minor
Take prerequisites for grad school

Majors vs. Minors vs. Concentrations

Now that you understand the three parts, let's clarify these confusing terms:

Your Major

What: Your primary field of study
Required? Yes

Example: Psychology major takes Intro to Psych, Research Methods (core) + chooses from Cognitive, Social, Sports Psych (electives)

Concentrations

What: A focus area WITHIN your major
Required? Sometimes (depends on major and college)
Credits: Part of your major credits
Example: Business major with concentration in Marketing, Finance, or Entrepreneurship
Key point: It's NOT extra—it's how you specialize within your major

Minors

What: A secondary field, completely separate from your major
Required? No—totally optional
Credits: 15-22 credits (5-7 courses)
Can be: ANY subject, related or unrelated to major
Example: Business major + Spanish minor, Biology major + Art History minor

When Do You Decide?

Core Curriculum: Start first year
Major: This is dependent on college. Some colleges require you to apply to their school with a major. Others will not let you declare a major until your sophomore year. Some will let you change your major if you start and decide you want to do something different, and others can make that very difficult. So it is critically important that you understand this by college. And you should NEVER assume you can apply to get into a college with one major and then easily switch majors to a more competitive major later.
Minor/Concentration: Usually sophomore/junior year
Electives: Throughout college

Important: Some courses count for multiple requirements. A Psychology class might count as both gen ed AND major requirement if you're a Psych major.

What Are the Different Types of Degrees?

Associate Degree (typically about 2 years)

Where: Community colleges, trade schools
Types: A.A. (arts), A.S. (science), A.A.S. (applied/vocational)
Then what: Enter workforce OR transfer to a four year college or university to complete a bachelor's degree

Bachelor's Degree (typically about 4 years)

The most common degree. Required for most professional careers like business or engineering.

Types:

B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) - humanities, social sciences, arts
B.S. (Bachelor of Science) - sciences, math, technical fields
Others: B.F.A. (fine arts), B.B.A. (business)

What's in it:

General education, sometimes called Core Curriculum (everyone takes these)
Major courses (your specialization)
Electives (your choices)

Note on Minors: While earning your bachelor's, you can also add a minor (a secondary area of study, usually about 5 to 7 classes in a concentrated field of study). It's optional and can be in any field. More on this in Part 4 of our Understanding Colleges Series!

Master's Degree (typically 1-3 years beyond bachelor's)

Advanced study in a specific field. Required for some careers (counselor, social worker).

Types:

M.A./M.S. - academic fields
M.B.A. - business
M.Ed. - education

Accelerated option: Many schools offer 4+1 or 3+2 programs to earn both bachelor's and master's in a total of 5-6 years.

Professional Degrees

This is specific training for licensed professions. Bachelor's degree must be completed first, and then you go on to Law School, Med School, Vet School, MBA, etc.

J.D. (law) - 3 years
M.D. (medicine) - 4 years + residency
Pharm.D. (pharmacy) - 4 years
D.P.T. (physical therapy) - 3 years
D.D.S./D.M.D. (dentistry) - 4 years
D.V.M. (veterinary) - 4 years

Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.)

This is the highest academic degree, typically obtained for research careers and university professors. Takes 4-8+ years beyond bachelor's.

Quick Timeline

What's the Difference Between a College and a University?

Generically, we often talk about “applying to college.” But it is important to note that some institutions of higher learning are called “colleges”, others are called “universities”, and still others are called “institutes.” So, what’s the difference?

Universities vs. Colleges

Universities typically:

Offer numerous undergraduate AND graduate degrees
Are larger institutions
Are organized into multiple “schools” or “colleges” within them (College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Arts & Sciences, School of Management, etc.)

Colleges can mean two things:

Standalone undergraduate institution - smaller independent schools focusing primarily on bachelor's (undergraduate) degrees
A division within a university - one of several colleges that make up the university (ex. University of Texas College of Business, College of Engineering, etc.)

Here's the confusing part: When you apply to a large university, you often apply to a *specific college* within it. So you'd say "I'm applying to the College of Engineering at The Ohio State University."

Note: Some schools are called "Institutes of Technology" (MIT, Rose Hulman, Georgia Tech, CalTech). These function like universities, and while historically focused on STEM, now often contain additional majors as well.

What about Liberal Arts?

“Liberal arts” is an educational philosophy, not a type of school. It means getting a broad education across humanities, sciences, social sciences, and arts—developing critical thinking and communication skills rather than training for one specific job.

You'll find liberal arts education in two places:

Standalone Liberal Arts Colleges

Examples: Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Pomona

Small (1,500-5,000 students)
Undergraduate only (or primarily)
Most do not have pre-professional programs like engineering or nursing
Small classes, close professor relationships
Most are actually "Liberal Arts and Sciences" colleges

Within Universities: College of Liberal Arts of College of Arts & Sciences

The liberal arts division within a larger university
Sits alongside Engineering, Business, Nursing, etc.
Note: Some universities split this into separate colleges (College of Liberal Arts AND College of Natural Sciences)
Always check how your schools organize these!

Key difference: Universities offer liberal arts PLUS pre-professional programs. Liberal arts colleges typically offer ONLY the liberal arts approach, although some re starting to offer business degrees or partnerships with other engineering colleges.

Which is Right for You?

Here is a general rule of thumb:

You may want to choose a liberal arts college if: You value small classes, want to explore before specializing, or prefer close-knit community

You may want to choose a university if: You know you want a specific program (engineering, nursing, business), want more options and activities, or prefer a larger environment

How Do College Credits Work?

What Are Credits?

Credits measure how much work a course requires.

The typical formula:

1 credit = 1 hour in class per week
So a typical 3-credit course = 3 hours in class per week

Typical courses:

1 credit: Labs, seminars
3 credits: Most standard classes
4-5 credits: Language, science with lab

Credits needed to graduate:

Associate: ~60 credits
Bachelor's: ~125 - 135 credits , so that means around 43 classes, or 5 - 6 each semester
Master's: ~30-60 credits

Time Commitment

Most colleges will tell you that, depending on the major, for every one hour spent in class per week you will need to spend 2 - 3 hours doing homework or studying.

Example: 15 credits per semester (5 classes)

15 hours in class
30-45 hours homework/study
= 45-60 hours per week (like a full-time job!)

Pro tip: Balance easy and hard courses so you don't overload yourself.

Semesters vs. Quarters

Many universities and colleges (90%+) are on a semester schedule. Some use a quarter system. There are also a handful of other schedules used, like ones that do intensive classes on 1-2 subjects only for 3.5 weeks and then move onto another one.

College Interview Tips: What to Know & How to Prepare

College interviews aren’t designed to trick you - they’re simply conversations that help schools understand who you are beyond your application. And while an interview rarely makes or breaks an admission decision, a strong one can make your file more compelling, especially if you’re in the “middle” of the applicant pool.

Here’s a simplified guide to help you prepare with confidence.

Why Colleges Offer Interviews

1. Demonstrated interest.
Some schools track how engaged you seem: visiting campus, opening emails, and even choosing to interview. Even doing the interview can work in your favor.

2. Sharing more about yourself.
Interviews are a chance to highlight achievements, updates, personality, or context that didn’t fully fit in your application. If you shine more in conversation, this is the moment to show it.

What Interviewers Are Looking For

Across colleges, interviewers generally look for:

Curiosity
Articulation
Authenticity
Enthusiasm
Integrity
The ability to reflect on your experiences

They’re not looking for perfect answers. They’re looking for a real person.

How to Prepare (Without Overpreparing)

1. Know the college you will be interviewing with.

You should be able to speak intelligently about:

Your intended major
Freshman curriculum
Traditions, programs, or opportunities at the school that genuinely interest you

When asked “Why our school?” have 2–3 specific reasons that show you’ve done your homework.

2. Know your story.

Remember that personal brand you worked on in your Personal Brand Workbook in your Application Preparation folder? Now is the time to pull it back out and use it! Look at Step 6 and identify the most important elements you want to share.

This includes your quick “Tell me about yourself” introduction: a 20–30 second snapshot that reflects your personality, passions, quirks, or experiences. Keep it natural and true to you. You should practice this! Until it is second nature to you!

Identify 3–4 key elements of your brand, along with stories you want the interviewer to remember. Think about your experiences that best represent these and prepare to talk about them. You might include what motivates you, your favorite and least favorite classes, strengths and weaknesses, family influences, extracurriculars (and why you do them), challenges, proud moments, and personal interests. But everything should tie back to your personal brand!

Tip: If you are doing a virtual interview, you can have a high level page of notes. You wouldn’t want to read from it at all, but you could certainly refer to it to make sure you’ve covered everything important to you!

3. Use the “Q = A + 1” formula.

Strengthen any answer by adding one piece of evidence : a story, example, or anecdote that shows why something matters to you.

Example:
Basic: “My favorite class is physics.”
Better: “My favorite class is physics because I love studying motion.”
Best: Add a quick example that makes it memorable.

Evidence = impact.

4. Ask thoughtful questions.

When they ask, “Do you have any questions for me?” the answer is always yes . Ask about:

Your major or academic interests
Freshman experience
Campus culture
Opportunities that matter to you

If your interviewer is an alumni (they attended that college), ask about their favorite parts of their college experience.

Tip: It is perfectly acceptable, whether doing a virtual or in-person interview to have a list of questions and refer to them. And even take notes!

5. Be open, warm, and yourself.

You don’t need to be bubbly if that’s not your personality, but you should:

Make eye contact
Speak with clarity
Share short stories
Smile
Show genuine interest

Interviewers are trained to “honor the introverts.” Authenticity matters more than volume.

6. If you’re stuck, pause.

It’s completely okay to say:
“That’s a great question. Let me think for a moment.”
Or even,
“I’m not sure, but here’s how I would approach something like that…”

Never fake an answer!

Tip: I recommend that you have a glass of water with you. If you need to take a moment to think through an answer, get a sip of water. It gives you time to think and you won’t feel like there is an awkward pause.

7. Bring a résumé (just in case).

You worked hard to create it, it shows all you’ve accomplished, and it is a great way for the interviewer to ask questions, as well as for you to refer to it to remind you of things you might want to talk about. Just remember that they are NEVER looking for you to simply read the resume to them. They want to understand the WHY behind your resume - what motivated you to do the things you did, what did you learn from them, how did you grow.

8. Follow up with a thank-you.

Send a short thank-you email within 24 hours. It shows maturity and helps your interviewer remember you positively when writing their report. And include your resume (again)! That way they have a soft copy of it to put with your file.

Questions You Should Be Ready For

Why your major?
What do you do outside of school? And more importantly - why and what have you learned?
What’s something not in your application? This might be something as simple as Sunday dinner with your grandparents or the summer vacation you always take. But be prepared to talk about something personal that is meaningful to you.

“What have you done, read, or seen recently?”

If asked, “Where else are you applying? ” you can redirect by focusing on what you’re looking for in a college rather than listing schools. Try saying “I’m looking at colleges that have a strong XXX program, will allow me to gain experience in XXX, and have a XXX atmosphere. That’s why your college is so appealing to me.”

Not all colleges track it. Here's the general breakdown:

Here's where it gets confusing: every university structures their honors experience differently. There's no standard model, so you really need to understand what you're getting at each school.

Some universities have university-wide honors colleges that overlay your regular major (like Arizona State's Barrett Honors College or Penn State's Schreyer Honors College). You're still majoring in biology or engineering or whatever, but the honors college provides additional seminars, research opportunities, special housing, priority registration, and other experiences on top of your regular coursework. You complete the same degree requirements as other students in your major, but you will also complete honors requirements like an honors thesis.
Other universities have honors programs within specific colleges or departments (like UT-Austin, where there are separate honors programs in Engineering, Business, Liberal Arts, Computer Science, and other individual colleges). Early Decision II (ED II)

Regular Decision (RD)

Regular Decision applications typically have deadlines in early to mid-January (often January 1st or 15th) with decisions usually released in late March or early April. You'll have until May 1st - the universal decision day - to choose which school to attend. Regular Decision is non-binding with no restrictions on where else you can apply.

When to use it: Regular Decision is the right choice in several specific situations:

You need more time to strengthen your application. If your grades, test scores, essays, or activities will be significantly stronger with first-semester senior year performance included, waiting for RD allows you to submit your best possible application.
You've already applied Early Decision to another school. Since ED is binding and most schools limit you to one ED application, you'll use Regular Decision for other schools you're interested in.
The college only offers Regular Decision. Some colleges don't have early application options, making RD your only choice.

That said, in most cases, if you have the opportunity to apply Early Action to schools you're interested in and your application is ready, you should do so. As always, you need to be careful, as not everything is 100% acc urate. Search for student-made videos about the colleges you’re considering. These often include honest “pros and cons” lists, campus tours, or “day in the life” videos that bring the student experience to life. Watching a variety of voices helps you see patterns rather than relying on one opinion.

What to Do If You’re Deferred or Waitlisted: A Practical Guide for Students

College admissions season can bring a mix of excitement and uncertainty, especially if you receive a deferral or a spot on the waitlist. While neither outcome is the “yes” you hoped for, both keep you in the running. Understanding what these decisions mean and what you should (and shouldn’t) do next can help you move forward with confidence.

Definitions: A Deferral vs. Waitlist

If you applied Early Action or Early Decision and were deferred , the college has moved your application into the Regular Decision pool. This is not a rejection. It simply means the admissions committee wants to compare your application alongside the full applicant group in the regular admission round. Often out-of-state students applying to public universities in another state will be deferred in the Early Action round while they wait to see how many in-state students accept (their state legislatures often require a certain percentage of students enrolled to be from their home state). Chances of admission after a deferral vary widely. Some schools admit only about 10% of deferred applicants, while others accept 30–50%. You will still be given a final decision prior to May 1st so that you can make a decision about where you want to enroll.

If you receive a waitlist offer, it means that they have reviewed your application and at this time, they have extended acceptances to other students and there is not space for you in their programs. But if they have more students decline their offers than expected (in the major you are seeking) they may extend you an acceptance in May, June, or even July, long after the college acceptance deadline. Being waitlisted can feel confusing - you weren’t denied, but you weren’t admitted either. Colleges use waitlists to manage yield (how many students ultimately come to their college), and the number of students admitted off a waitlist varies dramatically by school and year. But generally, if you are waitlisted, you should begin making plans to attend another college, and assume that you will not be offered a spot.

What to Do if You Are Deferred?

Reassess Your Current Acceptances

First, look at the schools that have already admitted you. If you’re certain you prefer those options and your family is comfortable with the cost, you may choose to withdraw your deferred application.

But only make that decision based on accepted schools.
Schools you’re still waiting on should not factor into this choice yet.

If your deferred school is still high on your list, or you're unsure, continue in the process.

Improve Your Chances To Be Admitted After a Deferral

Each college provides specific instructions in your applicant portal. Follow those carefully. Common steps include:

The Don’ts (What Not to Do)

Do NOT have a parent contact admissions on your behalf
Do NOT call or visit the admissions office repeatedly
Do NOT restate information already in your application
Do NOT wait too long to answer an additional essay, turn in a continued interest form, etc.
Do NOT submit a rushed or careless LOCI - it matters!

What is a LOCI and Should You Write One?

A Letter of Continued Interest tells the college that you’re still committed to being considered and updates them on meaningful achievements since you applied.

If you still want to attend that school, the answer is yes, you should write a LOCI , even if the college doesn’t explicitly ask for one. Only if the college specifically instructs you NOT to should you not write this letter!

A Strong LOCI Includes:

Gratitude
Thank the admissions team for continuing to review your application.
Clear Interest
If the school is truly your first choice and you will enroll if admitted, say so honestly.
If it's among several top choices, express strong continued interest.
New Information
Share only updates that occurred after you submitted your application, such as:

Improved grades in rigorous courses
Higher test scores
A new leadership role or responsibility
A job or internship
Awards, recognitions, or notable achievements

Your goal is to give the admissions committee something new and positive to consider.

What to Do If You’re Waitlisted

1. Follow the College’s Instructions Exactly

Log into your portal and complete any required steps immediately. Many colleges require you to confirm that you want to stay on the waitlist.

Note: Some schools don’t allow additional materials, so always check policies first.

2. Submit a LOCI (If Allowed)

Just as with deferrals, a LOCI can help if the school accepts them.

If your high school counselor or a trusted teacher has a connection to the college, they may be able to advocate on your behalf.

4. Secure Your Backup Plan

You must submit your Statement of Intent to Register (SIR) and deposit to another school by May 1. If you later get off the waitlist for another school later, you can switch, but you need a guaranteed spot for fall.

5. Keep Your Grades Up

Midyear and final transcripts may be reviewed for waitlisted students.

6. Be Patient

Waitlist movement comes late, once they see who enrolls at their college. Some decisions come in May, others in June or July. Most waitlists are closed by July.

7. Celebrate Your Other Acceptances

Don’t put your college decision and your happiness on hold! The schools that admitted you did so because they believe you will thrive there.

When thinking about college visits, it’s important to plan well in advance to determine when and where you will go, but also to be purposeful about what you want to accomplish while you are there.

When Should We Visit?

Touring while school is in session means you’ll actually see students on campus and it will provide a much more realistic experience.
Best times to visit?
3-4 day weekends in the Fall and Spring can be great for colleges that are closer to home.
Spring break is the perfect time for longer trips to multiple out-of-state colleges.
Capitalize on the Special “Open House” Days - Many colleges have their special days - Blue and Gold Day, Wildcat Day, Open House, etc. But they are days when they go WAY beyond the 90 minute tour. They will typically have different sessions for different majors, open up the residence halls, have a bunch of students around to talk with, have a “club fair”, … You will learn so much more about the college if you can visit on one of those days, as you will have access to many more people. So when you are planning your trips, try to align when possible around one of their special days!
What if the only time I can get away is during the summer? Focus on finding days that most of your colleges are having their "Open House" Days, as they will be far more productive than just doing a 90 minute walking tour with no students on campus!!!

Choosing Colleges to Visit

You are there for two purposes.
Can you envision yourself fitting in on that specific campus?
Even if you are not interested in that specific campus, how do you feel about a school that size? Or in that setting (urban, college town, etc)? Can you envision living on another campus that is roughly the same size or has the same urban/suburban/rural environment, etc.

If you have an idea of specific schools you want to apply to (or are thinking you’d really like), plan to visit those.
If you are just getting started and aren’t sure about what type of college you might like, mix it up! Visit a variety of schools—big and small, urban and suburban, in-state and out-of-state.
Create a list of schools you want to visit. Save in-state visits for weekends or shorter days off from school and plan to use your longer breaks for those that are a distance away.
Try to choose colleges whose breaks don’t overlap with yours so the campus is alive with students.

How to Plan a Group of College Visits

Tours fill up quickly, so try to plan as early as possible (at least 4-6 weeks in advance).
In Google Maps on your laptop, mark each school as a Favorite.
Determine which schools are in a close enough proximity that you might visit them on a several day trip. Look at the best order to visit them to minimize your driving/flying.
Once you have the list of the schools you would like to visit, determine when their tours are available. To do this, search on “XXX University Campus Tour."
You will likely find a student-led walking tour and possibly an admissions presentation.
Sometimes there are separate housing tours.
Sometimes you will see tours for specific departments on their main campus visit page. If you do NOT, that doesn’t mean that they don't have one, so you should go to the department page that you are interested in visiting and find a contact email and send an email asking if they have a tour or someone you can talk to.
Create a quick list showing when all of the tours are for the various schools you will be visiting before starting to schedule. Once you have an idea of which schools you can do on which days, reserve your spots.

Preparing In Advance for Your College Visit

Check Out Their Website - Read more about your major, look at the Student Life or Activities section, watch a recorded Information Sessions, or take a quick Virtual Tour. This will help generate questions you want to ask while you are on your tour.
Prepare Your Questions - Refer to the Questions to Ask When Visiting Colleges to create your list of most important questions you want to ask. PIck out 5-7 questions you want to make sure to get answered and put them on your phone!
Prepare to Take Notes - Install the CounselMore App on your phone if you haven't already. Click on the college you are visiting and at the very top you will see a Notes section. Take your notes right there so that everything is stored in one place! It is IMPERATIVE that you take notes! You WILL forget the details of a specific school after you have visited a few of them. After visiting and entering all of your notes, be sure to write in one of these responses:
I don't see myself attending this college.
This might be a good fit for me.
This would be a GREAT place for me to go!

Tips for a Great Visit

Wear comfortable shoes and take a water bottle!
Make sure your phone is fully charged!
Look around (this is more difficult for summer visits).
What are students wearing? Are they dressed in a way that you’d feel comfortable fitting in?
Are they laughing and talking as they walk between classes?
In the hang out places are they quiet and studying or talking together?
In the various classroom buildings, do you see flyers for clubs that look interesting?
How large are the classrooms? Would you be comfortable learning in them?
Ask if you can walk through the cafeteria (or even eat there!) It’s worth it to see the food selections AND the student vibe!
Ask the tour guide what they like best about their school? Like least?

College Research and Recommendation Letters

College Research and Exploration

Ideally, we'll complete most college research by spring of junior year. Here are two valuable opportunities available right now:

College Visits at Your High School

Most high schools host college representatives throughout the fall. Check your counselor website for the schedule. It is important to note that the person presenting is often the same admissions officer who will review your student's application. Ideally, students should:

Attend presentations for schools of interest
Wear something respectable
Arrive prepared and engaged
Introduce themselves afterward
Follow up with a thank-you email expressing continued interest. This personal connection can be especially valuable at smaller colleges.

College Fairs

Regional college fairs provide excellent opportunities to explore multiple schools efficiently. Start doing your research now so you can get some local fairs on your calendar.

Dress code reminder: Students don't need business attire, but should dress respectfully and appropriately.

Building Recommendation Letter Writer Relationships

Students will likely need three types of recommendation letters. Fall of junior year is the perfect time to begin cultivating these relationships:

1. School Counselor

Since counselors often work with hundreds of students, your student should proactively build rapport. I recommend scheduling a brief meeting to discuss college plans and goals. This helps counselors write more personalized recommendations.

2. Teacher Recommendations

Best practice includes one STEM teacher (math/science) and one humanities teacher (English/history), typically from junior year classes. Critical point: Good grades alone don't create strong recommendation letters. Teachers need specific examples of character, work ethic, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity. Students should actively participate in class, attend study sessions, and build genuine relationships with potential recommenders.

3. "Other" Recommenders

These are adults outside the school setting who know your student well: dance instructors, youth group leaders, volunteer coordinators, or employers. Students should identify and maintain strong relationships with these potential recommenders throughout the year.

Housing Application Process

Why Does This Matter?

You need to have a plan for when you will submit housing applications for each of your schools. This can even affect when you will want to submit your actual college application. In addition, some colleges require you to live on campus freshman year (or longer), some guarantee that you can live on campus if you choose to, and some do not guarantee on-campus housing and can fill up fast, leaving you with the task of trying to find an apartment for your first year. So it’s important that your family sit down together and do some research to understand the options and make sure that you are staying on top of these deadlines.

Do Your Housing Research Early!!!

Know which residence halls you’d like to live in. Ideally, by the time each college’s housing application is available to you, you'll already know which dorm is your first choice so you can apply immediately (if you are choosing to do so!). If you haven't yet done that research, you may want to make it a priority. Some universities have a live-on-campus requirement for first-year students, so if you're a first-year student, start exploring which residence hall would be your preference right away.

Possible Timeframes for Housing Applications

Each of your colleges may open their housing applications at a different time.

As soon as you submit your application - some (not many) colleges (The University of Texas at Austin!!!) will let you sign up for housing AS SOON AS YOU APPLY to the college, and long before you find out whether you’ve been accepted. It is a $100 non-refundable fee, but it puts you high on the housing list, should you get admitted. That means you will have a better chance of getting the on-campus housing you would like.

As soon as you are accepted - Many colleges allow you to submit a housing application as soon as you are accepted to “reserve your place in line.” If you decide not to go there, it will be non-refundable. But if you think you really might go there, and getting your first or second choice housing is important, it might be worth considering.

As soon as you enroll (or only after you enroll) - Some colleges only let you apply for housing once you have enrolled (said yes!) to them. Or they have a specific date that you can apply, but they require that you must have enrolled with them before they will let you submit the application.

At a specified date after College Decision Day (May 1) - Some colleges set a date in May or even June in which the housing process opens.

* In your App Tracker, locate the Housing Deadlines column and look at how each of your colleges handles Housing Applications.

Remember: Not All Dorms Cost the Same!

It may be obvious that apartments will cost you different amounts than dorms, but some students don't realize that residence halls within the same university may vary significantly in price. In addition, prices can vary within the same residence hall based on how many people live in the room, the amenities (such as kitchens or extra bathrooms) or other factors. Take a close look at your budget, whether it's your personal allotment or one set by your financial aid package, before pursuing a particular dorm. Carefully scrutinize the room and board prices of each option the college of your choice offers and compare those to your budget so you can evaluate the most affordable living situation.

SAT and ACT Test Prep

SAT or ACT? The easiest way to determine which you like better is to take a practice SAT and a practice ACT and see which one you feel more comfortable with (and get a higher score!) Or, if you really want to minimize your time on test prep, you will likely be taking a PSAT this October in school, and most high schools (in the south) have a school day SAT in the spring. If you have questions about this, be sure to bring it up in our next meeting.

When should I take my tests?

Lots of factors come into play when it comes to planning your test schedule. But at the highest level, most students should take their first tests in the Fall of their 11th grade year. So consider which weekends you may be busy with your extracurriculars, when you might be traveling, when you will have completed important courses (Algebra 2 is important). Also most students choose to take a test at least twice. It is strongly advised to try to be done with testing by the end of your Junior year so that you can focus the summer between Junior and Senior year on your college applications. But, if it's absolutely essential, you can take tests the summer of, and up until October of your Senior year.

What do I need to know about signing up for tests?

It is critically important that when you sign up for a test that you do NOT select any colleges to send your scores to. You should wait and see your scores before deciding whether you will send them or not. Yes, it could cost $14 to send it to a college later. But that will be money well spent.

You should sign up as soon as you have your test plan determined (and the registration is open). Popular testing sites will fill up relatively early and you may find yourself having to drive a long distance to find an open testing facility. But note that at a minimum you must sign up about a month in advance, so it's important to get out a calendar and start planning!

Should I really do anything to prepare in advance? There are certainly colleges that will not require that you submit test scores, but it is HIGHLY LIKELY that one of your top choices is going to be looking carefully at your test score - either because it is required or strongly desired! Just as you wouldn’t take a final exam for a course or an AP exam without preparing, it only makes sense that you invest some time in SAT or ACT test prep to ensure that your scores reflect your true abilities.

When should I prepare? The most ideal time is summer between 10th and 11th grades. You will be busy this fall with school and you really need to be taking your tests starting in the fall anyway (in most cases). And, if you do a little each week, it won’t seem so overwhelming. As an added bonus, if you are studying some all summer, you will start your Junior year off strong, as you won’t have forgotten key concepts over the summer!

If you took a test in the fall and want to improve your score in the spring, or if you are just getting started taking a test in the spring, the next best time to prepare is over the winter break and during January and February. There are numerous "bootcamps" around to help the student just getting started with test prep then.

How should I prepare? There are many philosophies about this, so I’ll share a few to consider.

Practice tests - regardless of how you might study and make sure you understand content, nothing beats taking practice tests! And taking them on a Saturday morning at 8:00am, timed exactly as the actual test, is the best way to maximize your time spent!

ACT Practice Tests
Unfortunately, the ACT is in a bit of a transition right now. They have just introduced a new digital test, but they do not yet have full-length ACT practice tests online. Most test prep experts are recommending that if you want to take the ACT, you stick with the paper version this year!

Self-directed Study - if you are the type that can come up with a plan and stick with it, then there are great free tools out there that you can use.

Khan Academy SAT Test Prep You’ll link up your practice test results to Kahn Academy and it will create a custom study plan for you!

Group and Private Lessons - If you know that you simply aren’t going to be self-disciplined enough to do independent test prep, then you should consider investing in a class or private tutoring to ensure that you make progress. Numerous test prep companies offer group and private sessions - some in person and some online. Here are a few, but there are many others .

More Than A Teacher - This is a popular Austin-based company that many students use for group-based test prep. They offer bootcamps right before big test days, as well as summer sessions.
Applerouth - This company offers group and private tutoring on a variety of subjects.
StudyPoint - This is a nation-wide company offering private tutoring online and in person.
JB Tutors - This is a small Austin-based company that does private tutoring in a variety of subjects, including SAT and ACT. They will cater tutoring to help specific needs.

The First Visit Home Can Be Complicated

In just a few months at college, your student has:

Made hundreds of independent decisions daily
Created entirely new routines and habits
Managed their own schedule without oversight
Developed new perspectives and opinions
Built a separate life you've only glimpsed through calls or texts
Begun establishing their adult identity

Meanwhile, you've:

Adjusted to their absence and created new routines
Perhaps repurposed parts of your home or schedule
Grown accustomed to different household patterns
Missed them while simultaneously appreciating certain aspects of their independence

When these two evolved realities collide during the first visit home, it's natural for some friction to occur.

What Parents Often Don't Expect

1. The Sleep Phenomenon
College students are chronically sleep-deprived. Don't be surprised if your student sleeps until noon (or later). This isn't laziness or depression—it's their body catching up on a significant sleep deficit.

2. The Friend Priority
Your student has likely been looking forward to reconnecting with high school friends just as eagerly as seeing family. This doesn't diminish their love for you, but represents their attempt to maintain important relationships across both worlds.

3. The Independence Assertion
After months of complete autonomy, reverting to house rules or parental oversight can feel demeaning to students. Resistance to expectations they once accepted isn't rebellion—it's a natural response to their evolving identity.

4. The Information Filter
You may expect a comprehensive download of their college experience, but many students share selectively. This boundary-setting is developmentally appropriate, not a sign of secretiveness.

5. The Divided Attention
Your student may be physically present but mentally elsewhere—texting college friends, worrying about upcoming finals, or processing their new experiences. This split attention can feel hurtful if you're unprepared for it.

Setting Realistic Expectations

Before your student arrives, adjust your expectations to align with their new reality:

Expect a visitor, not just your child
Your student now straddles two worlds—they are simultaneously your child and an independent adult with a life separate from your family. Recognizing this dual identity helps frame their behavior in a more understanding light.

Anticipate changed perspectives
College rapidly expands intellectual and social horizons. Your student may express opinions or ideas that surprise you. View these changes as positive signs of growth rather than concerning departures.

Recognize their need for space
After months of managing their own schedule and space, constant family togetherness may feel overwhelming. Their need for alone time isn't rejection—it's self-regulation.

Understand their genuine excitement and ambivalence
Most students feel genuinely torn—they're excited to see family and enjoy home comforts while simultaneously feeling pulled back to their college world and friendships.

Creating a Positive Homecoming Experience

Before They Arrive

Have a brief, direct conversation about expectations

"We're looking forward to seeing you! We understand you'll want to see friends too. Let's talk about how to balance everything during your visit."
“Your brother has moved into your room. We wanted to let you know so you aren’t surprised. We understand that you may be disappointed, so let’s talk about it.”
"Are there specific things you're hoping to do while you're home?"
"We'd really love to have dinner together on Thursday for Grandma's birthday. How does that work with your plans?"

Discuss household expectations thoughtfully (rather than assuming previous rules remain, consider which expectations still make sense)

Safety-related expectations (letting you know where they are, not driving under the influence) remain reasonable
Courtesy-based expectations (texting if they'll be out late) show mutual respect
Control-based expectations (curfews, detailed itineraries) may need reconsideration

Prepare yourself emotionally

Remember that your student's push for independence is developmentally appropriate
Recognize that some awkwardness in redefining your relationship is normal
Consider which aspects of your student's independence are worth celebrating rather than challenging

During Their Visit

Prioritize quality over quantity

Plan a few special family activities rather than expecting constant togetherness
Be fully present during the time you do have together

Be selective about battles Ask yourself:

Challenge: They want to stay out late with friends

Instead of: "You need to be home by midnight because that's always been our rule." Try: "When you're out late, I worry. Would you text me when you're headed home so I can sleep better? I trust you to be responsible."

Challenge: They're not participating in family activities

Instead of: "You never want to spend time with us anymore." Try: "I'd really love for us to have dinner together tomorrow night. Does that work with your plans? I've missed our conversations."

Challenge: Their habits have changed dramatically

Instead of: "Since when do you stay up until 3 AM? That's not healthy." Try: "I notice your schedule is really different now. How is that working for you at school?"

Challenge: They're defensive about academic questions

Instead of: "What were your final grades? We're paying for this education." Try: "What classes did you find most interesting this semester? I'd love to hear about what you're learning."

The Parent's Role in This Transition
